Dog Ticks

Tick infestation of pets is highly common. It can be seasonal in temperate areas, or year round in warmer places. The main tick species that can affect your dog in Malaysia is the brown dog tick.

The Danger of Dog Ticks Infestation

Ticks are the most important vectors of diseases in veterinary medicine: they can transmit the causative agents of babesiosis, Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmoses, tick-borne encephalitis, etc.

Tick control means protection

Use effective acaricidal product regularly for optimal protection.

Gently monthly dose of acaricidal product such as NexGard^® and NexGard SPECTRA^® can protect dogs against the various pathogenic effects related to tick infestation.

Brown dog ticks are the main tick species infesting dog in Malaysia. They can cause skin irritation and anaemia with heavy infestation.

Engorged

Brown dog ticks may also transmit microscopic parasites such as Babesia, which can result in severe anaemia. They may also transmit other infectious diseases.

3-host tick

Tick has wide range of hosts. Life cycle of tick has 4 stages:

Egg > Larvae > Nymph > Adult

Each stage (except egg) of brown dog tick requires a new host for feeding. Hence, it is a 3-host tick.

Female ticks lay eggs

Averagely 3000 to 10000 eggs are laid at once

Adult female ticks lay eggs on the ground, not on the host. The process usually within 24-48 hours. The female ticks then die.

94-97% of the tick's life is spent off host

They can be found hiding in environment such as gardens, bushes, cracks on concretes, waiting and searching for hosts.

Tick infestation can be dangerous

The direct pathogenic effect of ticks is linked to their blood meal.

Heavy tick infestations may lead to anaemia. There might also be local skin injury at the site of attachment with local inflammatory reactions, which may predispose to secondary bacterial infection.
